The law regulating citizenship in Lithuania is the law No XI-1196 of December 2010, as further amended in 2016. Lithuanian citizenship can be acquired either by being born in Lithuania, by marriage or else by naturalisation. In order to acquire nationality through naturalisation, one is required to take the oath to the Republic of Lithuania, to pass a Lithuanian language examination and to provide evidence of permanent residence in Lithuania for ten years.
Following the amendments of 2016, dual citizenship was introduced and allowed only in exceptional circumstances those being:
1990 and acquired citizenship of another state, or is their descendant;
being a citizen of another state;
the Republic of Lithuania.
The law stipulates that if a Lithuanian citizen acquires a citizenship of another state it shall lose
the Lithuanian citizenship unless it satisfies one of the above conditions.
