Allowed

Citizenship in the Republic of North Macedonia may be acquired on the basis of origin if both parents are citizens of the Republic of North Macedonia; one parent is a citizen of the Republic of North Macedonia and the child is born in the Republic of North Macedonia and the parents do not choose the citizenship of the other parent; or if one of the parents is a citizen and the other parent is unknown or without citizenship and the child was born abroad.

Adopted children to citizens of the Republic of North Macedonia are entitled to citizenship of the Republic of North Macedonia, and recognised refugees may also apply for citizenship.

A child born or found on the territory of North Macedonia to unknown parents, or parents with unknown or no citizenship, is entitled to citizenship of the Republic of North Macedonia. If by 15 years of age it is determined that the child’s parents are foreign citizens and the child will not be left without citizenship, the child will lose the citizenship of the Republic of North Macedonia.

Citizenship of the Republic of North Macedonia can also be granted based on naturalisation and international agreements. A person living in the territory of North Macedonia for a period of 8 years can apply for citizenship of the Republic of North Macedonia. In addition to a list of legal requirements, knowledge of the Macedonian language is required and, in this case, the evidence of release of the original citizenship.

A person married to a citizen of North Macedonia can apply for citizenship after 3 years of marriage. This person must have a stay of at least 1 year on the territory of North Macedonia. In this case, there is no need of evidence of release of the original citizenship.

According to Article 2 of the Macedonian Law, citizens of the Republic of North Macedonia can hold dual citizenship. A citizen of the Republic of North Macedonia holding citizenship of another state, in the Republic of North Macedonia shall be considered exclusively as a citizen of the Republic of North Macedonia unless otherwise determined by an international agreement.
